International conference focusing on TCM opens in Shanghai

The 9th Plenary Meeting of International Standard Organization and Technical Committee 249 (ISO/TC 249) opened in Shanghai on June 4, with an emphasis on traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), and its international standards.

Representatives from China, Japan, South Korea, the United States, Germany, Australia, Thailand, Saudi Arabia and members from international organizations such as the World Health Organization are attending the three day event.

The Shanghai government has made great efforts to boost the international development of TCM and further promote the global presence and acceptance of this field of medicine, said Xu Kunlin, the deputy mayor of Shanghai at the opening of the conference, which runs until June 7. 

"We have established a host of TCM facilities across the world through partnerships with well-known overseas universities and organizations as well as English magazines on TCM culture."

In recent years, TCM has gained a wider global recognition, and an increasing number of researchers have won global awards..

The Plenary Meeting of ISO/TC 249 provided a platform for experts across the world to have in-depth discussions about TCM.

Founded in 2009, the ISO/TC 249 committee is responsible to facilitate TCM research, and the development and formulation of TCM standards. Its secretariat is based in the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. To date, the committee has created 21 international standards on TCM regarding aspects such as herbs and use of acupuncture needles.
