SMBQTS betters quality standards to boost 'Brand Shanghai'

Brand building is important as it may serve to differentiate a company or a country from competitors. The State Council set May 10 as “Brand China Day” to encourage economic restructuring and upgrading in the country. 

As an active response to this initiative, Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision (SMBQTS) launched its Shanghai brand building campaign.

Shanghai, in eastern China, is known as one of the most populous cities in the world and global financial center, but it is also the birthplace of modern Chinese industries and brands. Since 1996, the city has earnestly pursued its brand building strategy, which produced 1,191 globally reputed brands, such as Shanghai Electric, ROEWE, Lao Feng Xiang Jewelry, Sine, Ley’s, and more.

Shanghai has seen increasingly large profits thanks to the brands developed in the city. For example, Shanghai bagged revenue amounting to 30 billion yuan ($4.35 billion) which was increased to 2.2 trillion yuan. 

Shanghai’s success in China and overseas is closely associated with its endeavors to seek breakthroughs in quality supervision and technologies. Up to now, Shanghai’s municipal government has given a total of more than 100 enterprises quality awards . Prestigious Shanghai brands performed over 1,000 important projects and gained profits higher than 30 billion yuan in all.

Also, starting in 2012, Shanghai has had a project to build up a zone to showcase its national and city brands. SMBQTS and its subsidiary organizations started the “Brand Shanghai” campaign from 2016 and hoped to produce effects similar to “Made in Germany” and “Swiss Made” with improvement of standards, mechanisms, and systems used to test product and service qualities.
